America, also known as the â€Å"Land of Opportunity† is just that. Many people have seized the opportunity to buy a piece of the American Dream, by starting a variety of businesses, franchises, and other personal ventures. The Fast Food Industry is a perfect example as it can range from small private owned restaurants to large franchises bringing in millions of dollars per day. These restaurants offer a vast variety of foods for the indulgence of their customers with options as far as the eye can see. However, the success of this industry does not come without a price. Because of the severity of the health risks including destructive eating patterns associated with fast food consumption, owners should take personal responsibility in protecting consumers from the harmful ingredients served in their restaurants. The fast food industry’s irresponsibility of serving harmful ingredients to the public and disregard for overall consumer health in America is directly responsi ble for our nation’s epidemic of obesity related illnesses leading to death and should be penalized under law as neglectful practices. Many consumers enjoy the many varieties of fast food offered as they appeal to every taste, culture, and guilty pleasure and can be very easily obtained. The option of getting any ethnic food, at any time, with ease of convenience is looked upon as a great privilege and a luxury. However, due to such a vast (and continually expanding) number of these restaurants, there is a direct connection linking these foods to many eating disorders. Abusive eating habits contribute largely to the massive intake of fast food in our country often leading to frequent and destructive overeating. Many scholars and researchers are defining this food as being addictive. This type of food is designed to stimulate overeating, typically by using a combination of sugar, salt and fat, all shown by research to be addictive. The ingredients of fast food tend to be of poor quality and unappetizing, the addictive ingredients ensure a huge turnover of high calorie food, which can lead to obesity and poor nutritio n. Many eating disorders are often developed in this place of excess. Binge eating involves consuming a large amount of food in a short space of time. Many restaurant owners believe that it is the individual consumer’s responsibility to make the decision of what they purchase and consume thus leaving them free from responsibility. They wash their hands of responsibility in a sense, crediting the customer’s ability to make wise decisions. They believe that  they are not â€Å"forcing† anyone to do anything against their will, but only creating options in this land of opportunity. I believe that there should be responsibility taken on the parts of owners, managers, and manufactures in the fast food industry. There needs to be some sort of consideration and concern for the overall health of the public consumer. Owners should take responsibility for not only the cleanliness of the facility but the content of the food as in relation to excessive sodium, fat intake, and sugar overload. If every individual owner took this additional step, the health of many Americans would not be jeopardized every day. The Fast Food industry is one that has made up a large part of America’s economy and culture. In our â€Å"microwave† society, we are faced with food options seemingly on every corner. We have unlimited choices and pleasures from every food category. However, with all of this freedom of choice, many consumers tend to be unaware of the harmful ingredients used to prepare what we so enthusiastically embrace. Over time, these foods lead to diseases often causing death. The consumption of fast food presents us with an underlying issue on a much larger scale. Many of the food ingredients served in this industry are unhealthy leading to obesity related diseases often leading to death. The food most often consumed at fast food restaurants, hamburgers, tacos, fried chicken and French-fries, is loaded with sodium, saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol and calories. Many health risks are directly associated with an excess of these ingredients listed above. While Fast Food businesses flourish, the overall health of their consumers is compromised. It is vital to understand the effects of these foods so we can make more informed decisions for ourselves and our families.

Leadership Profile Essay

I am currently the Director of the Patient Care Management Department at one of the local for-profit hospitals. We have gone through some tremendous changes since I have been there. When I started at the hospital, we did not have a director we only had a team leader and the hospital was up for sale. April 2012, the team leader decided to resign. I was then nominated by my co-workers to step up to the team leader position. Immediately the hospital was sold and they posted a job listing for director of our department. For the next year, there were only a scant number of interview prospects for the job listing. I then decided that I should tackle this job opportunity, so I applied. In the midst of all of this, the new owners brought in a consulting firm for our department. The consulting firm mentioned to upper administration that there was great talent already in the department to fulfill the director position. In May 2013, I was promoted to director. I currently oversee the day to day operations in the department. Leadership Weakness I consider Welch’s core principles of voice and dignity to be an area of development. As indicated in Welch’s book Winning â€Å"every person in the world wants a voice and dignity, and every person deserves them†. As an evolving leader, this will be a principle that needs further development. I need to learn to conduct my voice in a professional manner so that I am heard and well respected. I also want to allow my team to have a voice and dignity in the workplace. I want them to bring all their brain power to the table (Welch, 2005) and make sure they know they can do this. Leadership Profile I was given a task to handle in my department even though it really should have been assigned to another department. I did not want to turn anything down being the new person and fear of having a voice, so I accepted the responsibility of writing the policy. I started to work with one of my team members to write the policy. My team member came to me one day and stated â€Å"I really do not mind helping write this policy but it should really be the other department†. I listened and once she was finished I scheduled a meeting with the director of the other department. I met with the other director to discuss that his department should really take a handle on writing this policy and that we would help in any way possible. I had a voice and was listened to because the other department has now been assigned the policy writing. This has impacted me as a leader because we all should have a voice. Everyone in the work-place deserves to be heard. Winning states that not â€Å"everyone’s opinions should be put into practice or every single complaint needs to be satisfied†, however this team members opinion did need to be heard. If I would not have given her a voice, we probably would still be writing the policy. Voice and dignity in relation to my D/C management style, I am very direct and straightforward (â€Å"Everything Disc Management Online Profile†, 2008). This is where I need to be mindful when speaking, that I do not come across as harsh. The voice and dignity principle that I plan to improve will take specific steps. I plan to execute methods within our department that will consistently allow every ones voice to be heard. I will set up monthly meetings where everyone will be able to discuss any concerns or ideas to better improve our workflow. I will keep meeting minutes where I can go back to address these Leadership Profile concerns and see where we can make changes and even collaborate with other team member’s hospital wide. The team will also know that they can come to me at any time or day to discuss issues and that I will listen openly and confidentially if need be. This will give them a chance and opportunity to feel included in the task at hand. Leadership Strength Winning states that â€Å"leaders relentlessly upgrade their team, using every encounter as an opportunity to evaluate, coach, and build self-confidence†. I consider this to be a strength of mine. Before I took this new position, I knew that I had to get the best team together if we wanted to succeed. I had evaluated two employees that were not capable of performing the daily job duties, and released them. I did lots of research on my prospective employees and hired the best. Now that I have a fully qualified team, I am constantly looking for ways to enhance the department and their skills. I also look daily to entertain one’s self-confidence if appropriate. This is a passion of mine to acknowledge others when they have earned it. As indicated in Welch’s book Winning â€Å"when you become a leader, success is all about growing others†. I feel this has impacted me as a leader because I take pride in helping and watching others grow. The growth of others represents my management style in that I am results-oriented. I like to see the end product of my team members. With my style I also need to be conscious not to be so demanding. To further improve on leadership rule number one, I would like to incorporate a monthly evaluation tool that can also be part of their quarterly review. This will allow me to be managing Leadership Profile their production throughout, instead of waiting to the end to do the quarterly review. I believe when waiting until the end of the three month period to do the quarterly review, we lack the ability to constantly upgrade because things are missed or forgotten. This makes the quarterly review less worthy and a disadvantage to the team, the team member and myself. Recommendation As a young leader, I want to learn from the Jack Welch Management Institute and apply my learning daily. I hope to accomplish becoming a more effective leader in the near future. We have, as a collective planet, become overly dependent on technology for our existence in our everyday lives. Technology is not something that was created in order to create a slew of technology dependent people. Rather, technology is continuously invented, reinvented, and improved upon by its creators in order to help make our lives easier and allow us to keep in personal contact with the people around us. It was never meant to create a bubble within which one can function without ever crossing paths or personally speaking to another person. That was never the idea behind all of these technological advancements. Rather than creating a beneficial synergy between man and technology, a disconne ct was created between man and fellow man due to the middle man known as technology. Our whole world is totally run by technology. All of our actions are dictated by the existence of a gadget that aids us in doing various activities that we used to be able to do without any help from machines or gadgets, but we managed to complete through the help of other people. From the complicated tasks of laying building foundations for the constructions of a building, all the way to the simple task of taking a hot shower, we have given up even the simplest of human activities to technology in order to do things faster, easier, and better. However, one cannot help but wonder as to what is lost by human beings in this aspect. Surely there is a problem with the over dependence of mankind on technology. Take for example, the case of a medical patient who has come in for a check-up. Say this patient had a CT Scan procedure done. The technologist runs the test without knowing that the machine was de fective. The results come out and show the that patient has a tumor, which was not actually a tumor but a problem with the scanning system of the machine. The attending physician relays the same information to the patient and begins to draw up a treatment plan. Nobody bothers to question whether the technology used in the test made a mistake. That is because technology is supposed to be infallible and therefore always correct. Human dependence on technology in this case just caused harm to another human being. This type of technology dependence is something that actually happens quite often these days in the medical field.
